flickr!

Interesting find. Here is a link to an image of a normal tympanic membrane (your eardrum). http://www.flickr.com/photos/7261093@N04/414486070/. Did you know that your eardrum is only around 0.07 mm thick (Gelfand, 1997;"Essentials of Audiology", p.44)? No joke.

Searching on flickr was a bit shocking. I found a random picture of my aunt at a meeting.

Here is a link to a photo I uploaded onto my lovely new flickr account. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25393404@N02/. It is the only one I could find that didn't have people prominately in it who wouldn't appreciate me publicly displaying it.

RSS

I am sorry I can't write 150 words about RSS. It is handy. Makes things more effectual in that you don't have to page surf to get all your news.

Library Thing

http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=TobyEWilson

You'll soon find out that I am a fantasy geek.

Technorati

Well I am going to assume that I understand what Technorati is, but if I get it wrong, comment and give me a gentle nudge in the right direction. For people this works for I am sure they love it. But I have to wonder, who has all this free time to inhale millisecond updates from blogs? Most professions are not web integrated like this library. I also do not understand the need for instantaneous alerts about blog postings. Is the information that important? These are not official journalistic sites. What percent of blog postings would you consider worth being tagged. Most of them are probably about celebrities anyways. P.S. I am sure this is not the most educated posting, but it is required and this is all I could think of to say.

Social Bookmarks

There comes a point I believe when people need to "stop sharing" their hard work. This reminds me of high school and being the geek that explained the assigned book to the jock before the daily quiz. To me bookmarks are like research homework. Why should other people get the credit for doing none of the work....long, tedious, pain-staking work. But lets not forget I am a student, my bookmarks are answers to homework assignments or tests. This sentiment really does not apply to a work environment.

Anyways....how can this help our patrons? I think it is too specialized...the website already provides subject guides and topic listings....I think del.icio.us still falls prey to the issue of too many bookmarks.

Learning Experience

We had a patron wanting to know how to copy an image from the web onto a powerpoint. This is easily done with a PC and I thought I would master the situation in a jiffy. To my horror the guy had a MAC. The last time I used a MAC was in junior high. To make a short story shorter, the whole issue revolved around the lack of a right mouse button to pop up the menu where you can copy an image. After a 30 second google search the issue was cleared up....to do the same thing on a MAC you hold down (Control + Mouse Button) and you get the same pop up menu. You then copy and paste per usual onto the power point. So to reiterate, the right mouse button on a PC = (Control Key + Mouse Button) on a MAC. God Bless Google.

Introduction

I am sure there are many people who don't know who I am. I am a night staffer. I work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I am also a 3rd year graduate student in the Audiology Program on campus.
